South Africa's Western Cape
Conservation project
The Global Seabird programme, founded in 1997, is managed by BirdLife South Africa on behalf of BirdLife International. Funded initially by the RSPB, then the British Birdwatching Fair, the primary objective is to reduce the deaths of albatrosses and petrels. Currently, about 300,000 birds are drowned every year after swallowing baited hooks and being dragged underwater as a result of longline fishing industry practices.
