Northern Cyprus
Conservation project
Kuskor, the North Cyprus Society for the Protection of Birds and Nature, is a small, volunteer-based group established in 1991 that works closely with colleagues in Greek Cyprus. Work includes breeding seabird surveys, including of Audouin’s gull, and a recent success is the designation of part of the Karpas Peninsula as a specially protected area. Nearer to where we stay, a project aims to conserve ancient olive trees in the valley of Kalkanli.

In October 2008, Kuşkor in North Cyprus undertook a study into illegal trapping on the Karpaz peninsula. Read the report here.
Its conclusion: "Illegal bird trapping is far more widespread than previously believed but is as yet not as commercialised as the activity in the South."
The study was partly funded by Honeyguide. This continues in the absence of a holiday through the good offices of Roger Jordan and friends in the Wildlife Outreach Network: we have just (March 2009) sent a further £200 to Kuşkor.
