Spring in the Spanish Pyrenees

8 – 15 May 2008

A week's holiday for birds and flowers, based at the charming village of Berdún.

Berdún perches on a hilltop in the foothills of the Spanish Pyrenees. Vultures, eagles, red and black kites soar around its slopes and the rare lammergeier often puts in an appearance.
The scenery is dramatic with the constant backdrop of snow-topped mountains. There are deep gorges that attract griffon vultures, alpine swifts and crag martins. High pastures have gentians and other early alpine flowers at this time of year, and on lower slopes asphodels and early spider orchids are among the species to be found.

This holiday concentrates on the foothills of the Pyrenees, acknowledged as having Europe’s highest density of birds of prey. It is a good introduction to the wildlife of southern Europe but also has plenty to offer to more experienced wildlife travellers.

he Painting School is our base, two converted Aragonese buildings converted as a centre for holiday study tours. Many of the rooms have splendid views over the mountains, others overlook Berdún’s narrow, picturesque streets. There is a large and comfortable lounge, map room and library. Find out more by visiting their website.

Simple breakfasts and evening meals are served in Emilio’s small restaurant in the corner of the village square. He also provides generous packed lunches. Wine with meals is free; coffee is extra.

The Pyrenees may sound quite strenuous, but our itinerary is actually fairly relaxed. Anyone reasonably fit will have no trouble keeping up.
